A promising new approach to treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease has come from collaborative research among the New Mexico VA Health Care System, the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and the Mind Research Network.

These neurodegenerative conditions are characterized by the accumulation of harmful proteins in the brain. Under normal circumstances, the brain removes these waste products through a natural system called glymphatic clearance, which effectively flushes harmful proteins during deep sleep. Because sleep disturbances are common in patients with neurodegenerative disorders, this critical clearance process is often impaired.

Led by Dr. Henry C. Lin, the research team discovered a novel method for stimulating glymphatic clearance while patients are awake. The technique uses timed inhalation of low concentrations of carbon dioxide to trigger the natural movement of fluids to remove unwanted proteins from the brain.

To help successfully move this technology to market and distribute to patients who need it most, Dr. Lin and colleagues are actively partnering with the VA’s Technology Transfer Program (TTP) to develop and commercialize a prototype device. The team has also submitted grant applications to the NIH to support the next phase of clinical testing. If successful, this technology could offer a noninvasive, drug-free approach to supporting brain health and address a range of neurodegenerative disorders.

Additionally, Military.com highlighted the research which underscores the profound significance of the study for the veteran community. Because Vietnam-era veterans face an elevated risk of neurodegenerative conditions due to Agent Orange exposure, this breakthrough offers a pharmaceutical-free clue toward targeting the harmful protein buildup associated with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
