Teams (minimum of 2) can build or refine an idea that sets out to address a problem\, utilize a technology\, or create something new! DESCRIPTION:Learn more and register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2025-new-mexico-advanced-energy-award-finalist-pitch-registration-1200402719849?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n\n\nHosted by UNM Rainforest Innovations and the New Mexico Economic Development Department \n\nYou are invited to attend the final round of the New Mexico Advanced Energy Award finalist pitch competition at the Lobo Rainforest Building on Wednesday\, April 16\, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. to hear finalists pitch. \nFinalists include: \n\nSpiritus Technologies\nVastVision\nKiloNewton\nDash2 Labs\nCarbogenics\nFirescape\nThe Trollworks\n\nThe New Mexico Advanced Energy Award Pilot Program is a competitive state-funded grant that awards non-dilutive funds to proposals in advanced energy innovation and commercialization from New Mexico small businesses engaged in research and development. The funds seek to assist early-stage companies developing a unique product with strong growth potential. Selected proposals will be awarded between $250\,000 and $1\,000\,000 in funds. Funding will be awarded on a cost reimbursement basis. \nThrough this award\, the New Mexico Economic Development Department ultimately seeks to support the retention or expansion of economic-base businesses; the creation of jobs in economic-base businesses; the development of the tax base; and business development. \nThis is the second consecutive round of the Advanced Energy Award Pilot Program following the program’s launch in fiscal year 2024. In this inaugural round\, the state awarded $3.4 million in grant funds to seven New Mexico companies: Flow Aluminum\, GridFlow\, Hydrosonics\, Pajarito Powder\, Sigma Advanced Technologies\, TS-Nano\, and UbiQD.

Finalists will present a 90-second “live” pitch to at an evening reception in front of a panel of judges\, business leaders\, entrepreneurs\, investors\, and others in the community. \nFamily\, friends and supporters are invited to attend the final rounds to hear the finalists pitch and participate in audience voting for the top winner.

Kesan\, Ph.D.\, is a well-recognized and accomplished patent attorney with over 25 years’ experience. His work encompasses all aspects of patent enforcement\, patent strategy and licensing. He has been lead counsel or co-counsel in numerous patent lawsuits in various federal district courts around the country. He has argued numerous appeals before the Court of Appeals in the Federal Circuit\, and he has also served as lead counsel in over 30+ inter partes reviews (IPRs) and argued several times before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He has been actively involved in every aspect of patent litigation – as counsel\, Special Master\, appellate counsel\, technical expert\, legal expert\, and mediator. \nJay enjoys representing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-up companies\, helping them achieve their business goals and objectives\, and collaborating with their teams to help them succeed. \nHe is an inventor on 20+ U.S. patents. His scientific and technological publications and patents focus on rf circuitry\, wireless communication technology\, semiconductor device design\, integrated circuit design and fabrication\, and RFID technologies. \nJay has a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and worked for several years as a Research Scientist at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. He received his J.D.\, summa cum laude\, from Georgetown University and clerked for Circuit Judge Patrick E. Higginbotham at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. \n\nAlfonso Garcia Chan\, J.D.\nPartner\nKing & Spalding \nAlfonso Chan is a trial lawyer who focuses on litigating and licensing complex intellectual property cases on behalf of universities\, research institutes and technology companies. His matters are primarily focused on semiconductors and electronic technology-intensive matters\, as well as biomaterials and medical devices. Alfonso represents plaintiffs and defendants in district courts nationwide and before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. \nHe is also registered to practice before the U.S Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has experience in inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His international practice includes handling matters in China\, Taiwan\, Japan\, Korea and Europe. \nAlfonso served as an adjunct professor of International Comparative Law at Southern Methodist University\, Dedman School of Law. Prior to practicing law\, Alfonso was an officer in the United States Navy and nuclear propulsion engineer at Naval Reactors Headquarters. Alfonso received his JD from the Dedman School of Law and a Masters in Engineering from the University of Virginia.
