SUMMARY:The Creative Process and Copyright
DESCRIPTION:Secure your spot here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-creative-process-and-copyright-tickets-1982314630422?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \nValuable Property Created Automatically and for Free \nThe creative process can produce a wide range of very different expressions: text\, drawings\, photos\, film and sound recordings\, software\, choreography\, and architectural renderings. An important but often overlooked result of the process is that copyright protection for all such expressions is provided under federal law automatically\, free of charge\, and without the need for any government filing\, or the engagement of lawyers. Something for free\, finally! \nAs part of the first module of the presentation\, the speaker will discuss how the creative process produces copyright protection automatically and for free plus what are the copyright rights and the power and value of each such right. In addition\, the speaker will cover what is in the public domain and how those components can be used freely in the creative process. The often referenced but widely misunderstood fair use right will be discussed. \nThe second module of the presentation will cover two topics of relevance to the creative process: the licensing of creative works and artificial intelligence. A license is a very versatile tool that defines what another or other can do with copyright-protected works. The care that must be exercised with the use of public artificial intelligence systems during the creative process will be discussed also. \nThis HYBRID event is offered in-person at the Lobo Rainforest Building and virtually via Zoom. \nLunch will be provided for in-person attendees. \nIf you plan to attend via Zoom\, you can join virtually using this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/i/81415063432pwd=an2aSTb9WncQSfdrNQsuaalVc8W220.1 \nAbout Charles Valauskas: \nCharles Valauskas is a partner in the Chicago law firm\, Valauskas Corder LLC. \nMr. Valauskas speaks on a regular basis throughout the world on technological and intellectual property topics. He has authored two books on copyright plus chapters of books and articles on other intellectual property and business-related topics that were published by the American Bar Association and the Association of University Technology Managers and in the Boston College International and Comparative Law Review\, the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review\, andthe Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Newsletter. He has appeared on the BBC World Series and in a variety of popular publications including the New York Times\, the Wall Street Journal\, the ABA Journal\, and Crain’s Chicago Business. Mr. Valauskas is a former adjunct law professor for intellectual property matters in Chicago. \nMr. Valauskas’ involvement in the activities of organizations include serving on the Advisory Board of the Commission on Innovation\, Competitiveness\, and Economic Prosperity of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities\, the American Bar Association’s University Intellectual Property Law Committee\, and the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals “Future Look” Task Force and was the Vice President for Industry Relations of the Association of University Technology Managers. \nMr. Valauskas received a B.S. from the University of Illinois (Chicago)\, a J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law\, and an LL.M. from the Northwestern University School of Law.
