UNM Rainforest Innovations

University of New Mexico Assistant Professor Fernando Moreu and doctoral student Roya Nasimi from the Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering will present their drone technology at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in January in Washington, DC.  A division of the National Research Council, the TRB’s mission is to provide leadership in transportation innovation and progress through research and information exchange.  The inventors will be able to present to more than 13,000 transportation professionals  at the meeting.

The technology, developed in Dr. Moreu’s Smart Management of Infrastructure Laboratory (SMILab), is a drone equipped with smart sensors that assess the structural condition of railroad bridges in real time as trains pass over the tracks.  The technology is accurate, cost effective, and eliminates the need for inspectors to physically climb on tracks to examine the infrastructure.
