New Mexico has no shortage of innovation, yet the challenge is turning more of that innovation into successful companies, jobs, and economic growth here at home. The Albuquerque Journal recently explored that challenge in a feature on UNM Rainforest Innovations, highlighting both the growth in intellectual property and startup formation at UNM and the funding gap that can make it difficult for emerging companies to scale.
At TS-Nano, UNM Rainforest Innovations’ support in developing and patenting UNM-technology has been fundamental to their progress. They’ve secured more than $1 million in grants and a $1.5 million investment, but as they look to expand, much of the capital available continues to come from outside New Mexico.
There’s an incredible opportunity to turn the innovation coming out of our local universities and national labs into companies, jobs, and economic growth right here in the state. Thanks to the Albuquerque Journal for shining a light on the progress made and the work still ahead.
