Albuquerque, NM – MNT SmartSolutions LLC, a New Mexico Start-Up Factory Portfolio company, has recently advanced their product development focused on nanoparticle integration for the support of oral healthcare. This novel technology will change the future dental hygiene for people suffering from periodontal disease, gingivitis infections, and complications of orthodontic devices, wires, crowns and bridges.

The product behind the company is a nanotechnology-based interactive toothpaste/toothbrush combination solution to target bacterial areas that cannot be reached by current products on the market. Preliminary data demonstrates that serious and costly oral hygiene issues could be resolved and painful inflammation could be significantly reduced for billions of people worldwide:

“Certain types of bacteria are ultimately to blame for cavities and bleeding gums (gum disease) in addition to tooth decay and enamel deterioration. We are seeking to address these issues and prevent initial or additional damage to the teeth and gums. Inadequate cleaning is a common cause of bacterial or plaque buildup on the teeth and gums,” states Dr. Leisha Armijo-Martin, the Chief Technology Officer for MNT SmartSolutions. “Our product contains tiny, active particles that can be remotely controlled to scrub areas that toothbrush bristles and floss cannot clean. These particles were found to be effective against some common bacterial species that cause human oral diseases when grown in the lab, but until now we weren’t sure if it would work in a complicated environment, like the mouth.”

Recent preclinical testing of the MNT SmartSolutions’ toothpaste has confirmed a significant positive impact on the reduction in inflammatory markers and/or bacterial infection. The primary scientific goals of the study were to validate the safety and efficacy of the toothpaste in the oral cavity. Through a mouse model study, these results confirmed that the toothpaste was safe. The efficacy testing showed that the toothpaste eradicated difficult to remove bacterial biofilms. As a result, the test shows the potential for the nanoparticles in the toothpaste to actively clean the teeth and gums. The next round of funding will continue the preclinical studies needed to take the product to market.

MNT SmartSolutions is backed by the New Mexico Start-Up Factory and received a National Science Foundation grant for $276,000 to support research and development of this novel technology. In addition, the New Mexico Economic Development Department has supported the company with a $25,000 matching award to continue the phase one advancement of the scientific advancement and efficacy of the product.

MNT SmartSolutions has been invited to attend RESI Boston (Redefining Early Stage Investments) 2023, a prestigious international event that connects start-ups with investors and resources to support technology development and help move companies from SEED to Series B investment funding. The company has opened a full investment round of $3M to fund multiple initiatives including product formulation chemistry, small batch manufacturing, packaging, hiring additional employees, regulatory assistance and marketing support.
