Dr. Rodríguez was appointed as Interim Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico effective July 3, 2025. Prior to this role, she served as Senior Vice Provost at UNM since 2018.
Dr. Rodriguez is a Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico. She served as the Department Chair and Program Director from 2012-2018, and previously directed the UNM Speech Language and Hearing Clinic from 1992-1994.
Dr. Rodríguez’s scholarly work focuses on cultural competence and humility, bilingual language acquisition, and bilingual language assessment to accurately identify language learning difficulties, particularly among young bilingual (English/Spanish) children. Dr. Rodríguez co-developed a joint UNM-NMSU graduate training program in bilingual speech-language pathology.
Dr. Rodríguez has been widely recognized for her leadership and service. Her honors include the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Washington’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences Department, the Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), Diversity Champion from the Office of Multicultural Affairs of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, as well as the Honors of the Association and Fellow designation from the New Mexico Speech-Language & Hearing Association.
She served as co-editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology from 2010-2013 and was a member of ASHA’s Committee on Clinical Certification for Speech-Language Pathology. Most recently, she served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) for ASHA.
Particular Knowledge and Skills
Dr. Rodríguez’s clinical work as a bilingual speech-language pathologist centered on ensuring that bilingual children in New Mexico’s K-12 public schools were placed in educational programs best aligned with their linguistic and academic needs.
