Linda Griego | Entrepreneur and Member, UNM Rainforest Innovations Board of Directors
Ms. Griego’s distinguished career includes entrepreneurship, business, philanthropy, community development and public service.
For over three decades, she has served on several boards of directors of major companies including Paramount, CBS, American Funds, AECOM, Granite; and was a Los Angeles director of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
As President and CEO of Griego Enterprises, she developed restaurants, bakeries and commercial properties including the adaptive reuse of an abandoned historic 1912 firehouse into offices and the prominent Engine Co. No. 28 restaurant in downtown Los Angeles; and the renovation of the Oso Lodge in Chama, New Mexico.
She served as a trustee of educational and philanthropic institutions including the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, ArtCenter College of Design, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She is a long-time member of the Council on Foreign Relations and currently serves on the boards of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Exposition Park Foundation, and UNM Rainforest Innovations.
Griego is the founder of the MLK Health and Wellness Community Development Corporation focused on infrastructure projects on the 42-acre Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus in South Los Angeles. She also founded the MLK Community Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm supporting the MLK Community Hospital.
She played a pivotal leadership role as CEO of Rebuild LA, the public-private entity created after the 1992 LA Civil Unrest to restore economic stability and rebuild communities most affected by the riots. Her leadership helped to establish reinvestment in historically neglected communities and helped shape economic development strategies in Los Angeles. Griego received the UCLA Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the University in recognition of her civic leadership, philanthropy and transformative community development work.
Griego was raised in Tucumcari New Mexico in a family of bakers and railroad workers. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and college where she earned a B.A.in History from UCLA. After graduating from high school, she began her career in Washington D.C. as a congressional staffer for Congressman Tom Morris of New Mexico; and later for U.S. Senator Alan Cranston of California. She also served as Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles in the Bradley Administration.
